Understanding Social Inequality within Alberta

During my last year of university, myself and a partner developed a comprehensive project compiling months worth of research and development revolving around the research question/wicked challenge of "Understanding the barriers regarding social inequality that marginalized/racialized groups encounter in Alberta". Through this eye opening research project, I uncovered that inequalities within modern society are by design.

Through desk research, fieldwork in the form of face-to-face interviews, as well as interviewing subject matter experts on the topics of social inequality, discrimination, racism, and EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion); This research project identified three of the many systematic barriers of social inequality in Alberta. (1) Access to basic services of marginalized/racialized groups, (2) Discrimination in the workplace, (3) and underrepresentation of marginalized/racialized groups in Alberta. The hope for this research, and the development of this project was to raise awareness of these social barriers and injustices in order to promote systemic change in Alberta's communities. Many of Alberta’s marginalized/racialized groups have encountered experiences of racism, microaggressions and oppression; which has led to mental health issues and problems that are unforeseen and alienated by society.

The results of months of research were a comprehensive 95 page research dossier which held a literature review with a minimum of 20 sources, subject matter expert interviews with full transcripts and findings, and fieldwork interviews with full transcripts and findings of the field-based data collection. Further, we developed a diagram displaying these social inequalities and barriers, along with the final exhibition seen below. The Image below is our exhibit which displays our research dossiar, diagram and final piece made over the course of this project.
